Hello Mariposa Families!

Welcome to Mariposa Elementary School! My vision as Mariposa’s principal is to empower and support students in achieving their highest potential and succeeding in the learning process! I am devoted to our students, staff and families, to ensure that we provide a safe learning environment where students thrive both academically and socially. My goal is to provide every student with the positive support that he/she needs to experience academic success and meet his/her highest potential. This is my 17th year as an educator in OMSD. I became a teacher 17 years ago because I genuinely love children and want to see every student succeed in school! I am excited and proud to serve your family!

At Mariposa we are committed to preparing our students for success in college, their careers and the 21st century. We believe that all students can and will learn! What does your child want to be when he/she grows up? Does your child have a dream? How will your child prepare for his/her future? Our students deserve the best education to open the doors of opportunity in their future!

That means we have to start preparing now– with our TK students all the way up through 5th grade. We want to provide our students with the tools they need to meet the challenges they will face in middle school, high school, college and their careers.

The big question is, how will we do this? The answer is, together and with hard work! We will be focusing on three main goals this year. Number 1: students reading non-fiction text at or above grade level with the ability to understand and analyze complex text. Number 2: students at or above grade level in math with the ability to apply math skills fluently to solve real world problems. Number 3: students articulating their thinking and reasoning both verbally and in written text. These skills are foundational in preparing our Mariposa Tigers for college and their careers!

At Mariposa we are committed to providing an instructional program that will help open the doors of opportunity for them in their future! Our teachers will be focusing on these three goals daily. These skills will be embedded in everything students do in the classroom. Mrs. Bryant and I will be providing support to teachers in their classrooms and through training to accomplish these goals. Our Mariposa team will continue to work hard each day for your children! Our teachers, office staff, support staff, and even our custodians are 100% committed to ensuring that your student has a successful and memorable experience here at Mariposa!

Our Mariposa Tigers will come out on top! They will be ready to exit Mariposa and enter middle school with the ability to succeed! With this strong foundation, all of their dreams can come true!

Our theme this year is, “Fired Up for Reading” and students have many chances to earn fantastic incentives and rewards!

Student Activities: It is important that our students grow academically as well as socially. In order to create a safe and engaging learning environment we provide numerous social opportunities for students. We will continue to develop our Student Council program. Our Student Council works together to help raise money for our school and make Mariposa a fun and engaging place for learning! We are excited to host our Second Annual Jog-a-Thon! At Mariposa we strive to provide numerous opportunities for parents to partner with us in supporting students! Please join us for any of the following events: Coffee with the Principal, School Site Council Meetings, English Learners Advisory Council Meetings, GATE Parent Meetings, Special Education Parent Meetings, Monthly Parent Workshops, and much much more! Another great way to get involved in your child's school experience, is to volunteer! We have many opportunities for parents to help out at school. For more information on volunteering at school, please contact our school office or Mrs. Bryant, our Assistant Principal. We have had a great turn out at our meetings and events this year and we want to thank all of our families for their support! We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming meetings and workshops!

Mrs. Amanda Colon

Principal, Mariposa Elementary
